History of the Helter-Skelter - ‘In confused, disorderly haste’
The Helter-Skelter, also known as the pepper pot Helter-Skelter and/or slip, dates to 1905 when it first appeared at Hull Fair, from various sources four wooden models were made by Griffiths and Morgan of Shepherds Bush, London. The vast majority of the rides travelling today are made of aluminium, providing a more durable ride.
The name Helter-Skelter is derived from the much older adverb meaning "in confused, disorderly haste". Maybe relating to going up and swirling back down to earth?
Did you know - The Beatles released a song in 1968 called Helter-Skelter that has been covered a further 2 times with lyrics relating to the funfair attraction.
Helter-Skelter’s have been featured in films, animations, and games and were also a centre attraction in the Norwich Cathedral in 2019. Wherever they are, you can be sure they are admired not only for the ride they provide but for their sheer size and grandeur.
